Abstract
A process of forming and heat-treating a steel product of chemical composition capable of exhibiting a metastable austenite structure comprises austenitizing, quenching sufficiently drastically to avoid transformation into pearlite and bring the product to a selected temperature region between the temperatures at which austenite transforms into pearlite and bainite respectively e.g. 500 DEG C., and performing upon the product within the selected region work sufficient to effect a deformation of preferably not less than 84% to strengthen the steel, then cooling into a region wherein the isothermal transformation products will be predominantly bainite e.g. to 400 DEG C. and tempering e.g. at 315 DEG C. within the bainitic region. The steel may consist of 3% Ni, 3% Mo, 0.2% C, remainder Fc.
