Abstract

A method of heat treating steel comprises rapidly heating a steel article in the form of a bar of 1 inch maximum diameter, or a sheet of 1 inch maximum thickness or a tube of 1/2 inch maximum wall thickness, for a time just sufficient for complete transformation to austenite to take place throughout the cross-section of the article, followed immediately by either martensitic quenching, or quenching to an intermediate temperature between the AC1 and Ms temperatures and isothermal transformation to a fine pearlitic or bainitic structure. Preferably the heating and quenching operations are effected in not more than 1 second. Cold water may be used as the quenching medium. Suitable steels may contain 0.1-0.9% C, 0.05-1% Mn and residual amounts of Si, S and P.
