Abstract
High speed tool steel containing in percentage by weight .C.0.55-1.6 .Cr.3.5-5.5 .W.5-24 .Co.0-14 .V.0.75-6 .Mo.0-8 .Fe.balance is heated to effect austenitization and is then quenched at a rate sufficient to prevent pearlite formation to a transformation temperature within \sB5 DEG C. of the temperature where the bainite nose touches a vertical tangent. The steel is held for sufficient time to bring about an isothermal transformation resulting in the formation of 7-13% of bainite, is then quenched to below -80 DEG C. and is held there to transform at least 95% of the remaining austenite to martensite. The steel is heated to temper the martensite and may then be reheated to temper any martensite formed during the first tempering step. Tempering may be carried out at 550 DEG C. in each case. The initial austenitization is preferably brought about in three stages; equalization at 500-550 DEG C.; at least two hours at 780-850 DEG C. after equalization at that temperature; up to one hour at 1150-1330 DEG C.
