Abstract
A method of quenching steel comprises heating a steel object to the quenching temperature and immersing it in a bath of quenching liquid which is subjected to ultrasonic waves having sufficient energy to produce cavitation at the surface of the object until quenching is complete. The passage of the ultrasonic waves which may have a frequency of 15 to 60 kilocycles per second may be continued while the article is being removed from the quenching liquid to reduce drag out. The object may have scale on its surface when being quenched, this scale being removed by the ultrasonic waves. The liquid may be agitated during quenching. Specification 797,417 is referred to.
