Abstract
1,190,951. Heat-treating crank-shafts. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. April 7, 1967 [May 26, 1966], No. 16086/67. Heading C7N. A low-carbon steel multi-throw crank-shaft is furnace-heated to austenitizing temperature and is then supported in a die-quenching fixture while water is sprayed through the dies on to the crank-shaft journals and fillets and the entire crank-shaft and fixture is immersed in a water filled quench tank; as an alternative to the use of the tank coolant may be sprayed all over the crankshaft, when treated in this way a crank-shaft of steel containing 0À24 to 0À4%of carbon is hardened over its entire outer surface to Rockwell C44-54, and has a hardness depth of 0À06 to 0À2. Apparatus for carrying out the process of the invention is disclosed in Specification 1,190,952.
