Abstract

1417435 Heat treating S G iron KYMIN OSAKEYHTIO-KYMMENE AB 11 July 1973 [12 July 1972(2)] 33035/73 Heading C7A and C7N Iron containing 0.1-0.26% Mo and 0.3-1.4% Mn is austenitized and then isothermally transformed by quenching into a molten salt bath to produce a structure of bainite and remanent austenite preferably containing 20-50% of the latter. The iron may additionally contain one or more of 0.03-0.2% Sn, 0.3-1% Cu or 0.5-2.5% Ni to develop a pearlitic as cast structure which readily undergoes subsequent austenitization. As particularly described iron containing in wt per cent is heat-treated at 900‹C for 2 hours, and quenched into a molten NaNO 2 -KNO 3 bath (50/50) at 370‹C where it is held for 10 minutes to 4 hours depending on the degree of transformation required. The process is used particularly for treatment of machine parts such as gear-.wheels, shafts, chain wheels, bearings, cams, crankshafts or wearing blocks.
