Abstract
1,190,952. Die quenching apparatus. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. April 7, 1967 [May 26, 1966], No. 46497/69. Divided out of 1,190,951. Heading C7N. Die-quenching apparatus particularly for treating crank-shafts comprises upper and lower platens carrying opposed die blocks, the latter having internal cavities communicating with the contact surfaces by a plurality of small passageways through which coolant is sprayed and having also a plurality of pads located on the contact faces to minimise the area of contact with the workpiece. The lower platen may furthermore be provided with a number of resiliently-mounted buttons which prevent contact between work-piece and dies until the latter are closed and quenching commences. As illustrated, movable and fixed platens 10, 12 respectively are each provided with a plurality of upper and lower hollow die blocks 14, 16 upon the face of which are adjustably mounted contact pads 36. The platens 10, 12 are connected to sources 30, 32 of coolant which is directed on to the work-piece 18 by a plurality of holes 42. A modified form of die mounting is also disclosed Fig. 5 (not shown).
