Abstract
1371640 Heat treating ball studs TOKAI TRW & CO Ltd 22 Dec 1971 [28 Dec 1970] 59645/71 Headings C7A C7N and C7U A ball stud 1 for a motor vehicle suspension or steering system formed from a carbon or low alloy steel containing 0À12 to 0À23%C is subjected to carburization BC, diffusion CD, quenching DE, and tempering FG. The ball only is then hardened by induction <SP>I</SP> so that the surface layer has a martensitic structure and the core comprises sorbite ferrite and bainite, the shank and threaded portion having a sorbitic surface and a core of sorbite bainite and ferrite. In a particular embodiment the steel contains by weight:- while carburization is carried out e.g. in propane, ,at 890 to 920‹C to produce a surface carbon content of 0À5 to 0À7%, over a depth of 0À3 to 0À6 mm., followed by quenching in oil. Tempering is effected at 420 to 430‹C while a final tempering at 150 to 200‹C may follow the induction hardening.
