Abstract
1361553 Heat treating steel FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 22 Sept 1972 43936/72 Addition to 1292800 Heading C7A [Also in Division F2] Components of rolling bearings (e.g. balls and races) are prepared by heating a blank of SAE steel 52100 to a temperature (e.g. 2000‹F) resulting in a completely austenitic structure, cooling the austenitized blank sufficiently rapidly to avoid the formation of any massive carbides and to yield a finely divided pearlitic structure, hardening the blank by heating to such a temperature and for such a time that it is insufficient to produce carbide growth but sufficient to establish a thermodynamic equilibrium between the austenite and undissolved carbide, quenching the heated blank in oil or a coolant producing a similar cooling rate and tempering the quenched blank to a Rockwell C hardness of 60 to 64. During the hardening step the blank is preferably heated to 1550‹F for about one hour. The blank is tempered at 250‹ to 400‹F.
