Abstract

A process for polishing glass articles comprises immersing the articles in a polishing bath containing sulphuric acid and hydrofluoric acid and applying vibratory energy at a frequency of at least 200 cycles per second to the bath whereby reaction products formed on the surface of the glass article are detached therefrom. Preferably sound vibrations are used and may be supersonic or a mixture of sonic and supersonic. The vibrations may be applied continuously or discontinuously and the frequencies may be varied during polishing. As in Specification 1,000,938, the articles may be alternately dipped into the sulphuric acid washing bath and the polishing bath. Between successive polishing operations, the concentration of reaction products is reduced by seeding the used bath and removing the crystallized reaction products. A number of particular examples are given.
