Abstract

A process for the surface treating of a workpiece of ferrous metal comprises directing an arc plasma effluent on to the surface of the metal to heat a shallow layer to a temperature above the critical temperature but below the melting point, and cooling the surface layer at a rate sufficient to produce the desired surface condition. The material may be cast iron or steel, the quenching effect of the mass of which is sufficient to produce the desired rate of cooling; the mass may, however, be cooled, e.g. by air or water. The plasma effluent may contain carbon in the form of carbon dioxide or a hydrocarbon, or may contain nitrogen, the elements carbon or nitrogen entering the surface layer of the metal. The process is stated to be particularly applicable to the hardening of the wearing surface of rails.
