Abstract
716,639. Heat treating ferrous metals. WALTL H. M. Feb. 27, 1952 [March 9, 1951], No. 5199/52. Class 72 The outer surface of solid elongated work-pieces of steel and ferrous castings is deep hardened by heating the pieces by radiation from a resistance element and ther cooling them by cooling means, the work-pieces being moved relatively to the heat ing and cooling means solely in the direction from heating to cooling. As shown, a work-piece 1, which may be rotated is moved in the direction of the arrow A through a heating unit having resistance elements 2, 4, a pipe 7 supplying a gas, e.g. hydrogen or nitrogen, to the heating zone, and a coil 6 from which a quenching medium is directed against the heated part. The movement of the work-piece may be continuous or intermittent. There are preferably three segments in the heater each of which is fed from one phase of a three-phase supply. The heating elements may be shielded by a heat-resisting covering which may be extended to provide a preheating zone.
