Abstract
516,867. Decarburizing alloy steels. WESTBERG, S. May 12, 1938, No. 14175. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] Low-carbon chromium-containing alloy steels are produced by subjecting high-carbon chromium-containing alloy steel in a form having a large surface area, for example granulated, to a decarburizing heat-treatment in the solid state, at a temperature of 1,000C. or higher, in an oxygen-containing atmosphere until substantially the whole of the carbon present in the material has been removed. Before decarburization the material may be coated with an oxide such as lime or magnesia, and the operations of granulating and coating may be combined. In an example, a material containing about 80 per cent. of iron, 19 per cent. of chromium and 0.6 per cent. of carbon, produced as by melting together iron and ferro-chrome, is granulated, and if desired coated with lime or magnesia, and is heated in a current of oxygen and inert gas passing at such a rate that carbon monoxide is swept away as soon as it is formed. The product, which may contain 0.03 per cent. or less of carbon, is melted and heated with a deoxidizing agent such as silicon. Specifications 504,122 and 514,491 are referred to.
