Abstract
Copper phosphide is obtained by treating cupric or cuprous oxide with phosphoric acid in the presence of carbon under conditions such that reduction is effected and the other products of the reaction separate by volubilization. According to an example, cuprous oxide is mixed with phosphoric acid and charcoal to form a homogenous and porous paste which is heated at 1100-1200 DEG C. in a graphite crucible. Preferably, the amount of carbon used is sufficient to form some carbon monoxide in addition to carbon dioxide.
