Abstract

Friction discs for brakes and clutches are made from a pressed and sintered alloy containing in percentage by weight Fe 70-90 Cu 15-25 C 2- 5, the iron and carbon forming a pearlitic structure. Free carbon in the form of graphite is also present, and the discs may be porous, the pores representing up to 30% of the volume. In an example, graphite powder was first given a thin coating of copper by mixing with copper hydroxide and heating in a reducing atmosphere. A powder mixture of 78% iron, 18.2% copper and 3.8% carbon was hot pressed at 1100 DEG C., allowed to cool, and then again hot pressed.
