Abstract

548,392. Discharge tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. April 18, 1941, No. 5051. Convention date, April 24, 1940. [Class 39 (i)] A discharge tube for use in selective ringing systems comprises (i) a main discharge gap between a plane activated cathode 22, 23 and an anode 28 of small area compared with the cathode and (ii) an auxiliary breakdown gap formed between two electrodes 30, 31 spaced apart and insulated from the anode ; these electrodes 30, 31 are preferably activated and provide a small gap. The cathode as shown is in two parts connected electrically but it may be a single disc ; the wire anode is insulated by a glass tube 29. The tube has a filling of 95 per cent neon and 5 per cent argon at a pressure of 50 mm. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also describes a tube wherein the breakdown gap is formed between the main anode and an activated wire ring placed near the anodes. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
