Abstract

757,465. Discharge apparatus. WESTING- HOUSE-ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Oct. 1, 1954 [Oct. 9, 1953], No. 28325/54. Class 39 (1). An electrode such as the anode 2 of an X-ray tube has an apertured shield electrode 16 in front of or partly surrounding it, and connected to it through an impedance 18. Thus, if high-voltage flash-over occurs in the tube, the current transfers to the shield, and has to traverse the serially connected high impedance, thus preventing its rise to destructive values. Either or both of the main electrodes may be so protected, and the construction may also be applied to high-voltage rectifiers. The connection from the impedance to the shield may be made by way of a metal envelope section 6, as shown, or directly through the envelope wall, or through one of the pinch leads.
