Abstract

920,005. Metal vapour converters. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 18, 1960 [Nov. 18, 1959; June 3, 1960], Nos. 39195/59 and 19759/60. Class 39 (1). In a mercury vapour rectifier, the cathode comprises a thin film of liquid metal upon a solid cathode member, and the main arc is initiated by a spark gap formed by electrodes 20, 21 extending down towards the cathode film. The spark gap electrodes are preferably concentric as shown. The anode and cathode are of mild steel, Mo or Ni. A shield at cathode potential surrounds the anode. The cathode is cooled, a baffle being provided in the cooling circuit. Inner electrode 20 is of tungsten and is insulated by a glass sheath 22. Electrode 21 is held at cathode potential and positive pulses are applied to electrode 20. In other modifications, a number of tubular anode leads are each coaxial with a cathode lead, or the anode and cathode leads are coaxial cables having tubular inner conductors. The outer conductors are the cathode leads, and the inner conductors are secured to each anode lead at the top to form a non-inductive arrangement. The inner conductor is a squirrel cage.
