Abstract

604,867. Magnetrons. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 6, 1945, No. 33083. Convention date, Dec. 11, 1944. [Class 39 (i)] A cylindrical split-anode magnetron has each gap shielded by a substantially U-shaped structure of conducting material spanning the gap and supported in insulated relation with respect to one of the anode members to minimize the escape of electrons from the interelectrode space. In the form shown in Fig. 1, one arm of the X-shaped sheet metal punching 13 is secured in a slot 14 in anode member 2 as by soldering or welding while the other arm dips into a recess 15 in anode member 3 the recess being parallel to gap 5. A similar shield 17 for gap 4 is secured in member 3 and insulated from member 2 by a recess 16, and the shields project about one-sixteenth of an inch from the sides of the anode members. The support conductors 6 and 7, which in the use of the device are short-circuited externally by a transverse conductor to provide a tuning circuit, may be formed of copper tubing sealed through the glass envelope by a seal which may include a fernico sleeve 8. Rectangular end shields 18, 19 help to prevent the escape of electrons from the inter-electrode space, and smaller end shields 21 to collect electrons escaping around the cathode 9 are supported by the cathode leads 10, 11. In one embodiment, (Fig. 2, not shown), both ends of the U-shields dip into recesses in the anodes, the shield being supported by a wire and glass bead from a cathode lead so that it is free to assume a potential depending on the charge collected. In Fig. 3 each U-shaped structure is formed by two parts 34, 35 secured to the anode members and separated by a diagonal slot 36.
