Abstract

542,393. Converting. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 29, 1940, No. 12294. Convention date, July 29, 1939. [Class 38 (ii)] [Also in Group XL] In high voltage gas or vapour filled arc discharge apparatus, in which the discharge is controlled by a grid 37, premature break-down between the control grid and the anode 19 is prevented by sub-dividing the voltage drop between them by an intermediate grid electrode 36 to which is imparted a fixed potential relationship to the anode and cathode, as by connecting it through a resistance 58 to the mid point of a potential divider 59 across the supply lines 48, 49. The functioning of the grid 36 is enhanced by the provision of a third grid 35 and means, such as the transformer 62, whereby the grid 35 is made negative relatively to the grid 36 when the control grid becomes negative with respect to the cathode. The functioning of the control grid is facilitated by an associated grid 38, energized from the same transformer 51, the resistances 54, 55 being such that the current flow in the discharge space tends to maintain the grid 37 negative with respect to the grid 38. The discharge device may have a solid cathode, or, as shown a mercury pool cathode 23 serving also as the source of ionizable vapour. A fixed gas, such as argon, may be used as an auxiliary ionizing medium. The cathode is carried in a metal container 12 insulated from the main body of the envelope 10 by an insulator 13, which is protected from the deposit of condensed mercury, by a drip baffle 25. The cathode lead is a heavy stud 27, the ignition electrode 28 is of the immersion type, and an auxiliary anode 31 has a lead 32 protected from the discharge by an insulating sleeve 33. The envelope 10 is surrounded by a cooling coil 16 and has an exhaust duct 17 for connection to an evacuating system. The anode 19 is substantially enclosed by the grids 35, 36, and the leads consist of concentric tubes 20, 40, 41, and metal lead-in rings 42, 43 having glass-tometal seals with the envelope. The seals are protected from the discharge by shields 44. Specification 488,209, [Group XL], is referred to.
