Abstract

429,872. Discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London.-(Assignees of Patent- Treuhand-Ges. f³r Elektrische Gl³hlampen ; 11, Ehrenbergstrasse, Berlin) Sept. 17, 1934, No. 26667. Convention date, Sept. 23, 1933. [Class 39 (i)] Electric discharge tubes or lamps having thermionic electrodes consist of an inner vessel for the discharge supported within an outer enclosing vessel by annular helices clamped between the outer vessel and metal rings carried on the inner vessel. The rings may be grooved to fit the helices, and form part of a framework which encloses the inner vessel and may act as a lead to one of the electrodes. In the lamp shown, the inner vessel 1 is supported by annular helices 15, 16 clamped between the outer vessel 2 and grooved metal rings 11, 12 which are pressed against the vessel 1 by connecting wires 13, 14. The electrodes 8, 9 preferably consist of rods of electronemitting oxides surrounded by tightly coiled tungsten helices which may also be coated with emissive material. The starting electrode 17 may be a tungsten helix coated with or containing emissive material and is connected to the lead 14 of the electrode 9 through the resistance 19 supported on a mica plate 20. The screw-cap 22 is secured to the outer vessel by a collar 23. The inner vessel contains any desired gases or vapours, and the outer space is exhausted or filled with a suitable gas. More than two annular helices may bo required for long discharge tubes, which may also be capped at each end.
