Abstract

413,166. Discharge apparatus. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE AKT.-GES., Siemensstadt, Berlin. Oct. 27, 1933, No. 29865. Convention date, Oct. 27, 1932. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v).] A controllable gas- or vapour-filled discharge tube has an incandescent cathode, an anode, and two grids located one behind the other in the discharge path, the grids being connected to a control circuit which enables them to be switched over between themselves, or in conjunction with the anode, so as to transfer from a continuous to a discontinuous type of control and vice versa. In the example shown, the indirectly-heated cathode (not shown) is surrounded by a heat-conserving shield 1, and two pot-shaped grids 2 and 4 closed at the bottom by covers 3 and 5 which conserve the heat of the discharge and protect the pinch from undesirable radiation. Beyond them is a pot-shaped anode 6 which has no cover, the anode lead being taken through the top of the tube. The heater of the cathode is adapted to work directly from direct mains voltages of at least 110 volts. For discontinuous control, the grids are connected together, or the grid 4 may be connected to the anode, either directly or through resistances. For continuous control, the grid 2 is used as an ignition anode, giving a mixed ion and electron discharge, from which a pure stream of electrons is drawn by the anode 6 and is controlled by the grid 4. The grid 4 may have a smaller mesh than the grid 2.
