Abstract
496,556. Photo-electric cells; electron multipliers ; cathode ray tubes. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. May 31, 1937, No. 14997. Convention date, May 29, 1936. [Class 39 (i)] An emissive surface, suitable either as a photo-electric cathode or for an electron multiplier, is made by oxidizing a metal base, treating it with an alkali metal, again oxidizing, and again treating with the same metal. The metal of the base should be such that the heat of formation of its oxides, per oxygen bond, is approximately equal to that of the oxide of the alkali metal employed, for example bases of beryllium, zirconium, molybdenum, columbium and zinc may be employed with potassium, rubidium and caesium ; sodium may also be employed. In the apparatus shown a photoelectric cathode 3 of the type described is exposed to light from a source 8 and the electrons emitted concentrated by a coil 15 on to a surface 7 of the type described. The secondary electrons are concentrated by a coil 17 on to an output anode 5. The coils 15, 17 may be energized from a battery 19 through a potentiometer 21.
