Abstract

499,649. Electron multipliers. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. July 22, 1937, No. 20323. Convention date, July 22, 1936. [Class 39 (i)] In electron multipliers having an end collector electrode 21, secondary emitting surfaces 5, withdrawing electrodes 9 and a magnetic field parallel to the surfaces 5 the electrodes being biassed positively to the thermionic cathode 29, the latter is surrounded by a magnetic shield 33, which prevents the magnetic field acting on the emission from the cathode and interfering with control by the grid 41. A positively-biassed screen grid 85 between the control grid and the multiplier electrodes prevents effects from changes in bias on these electrodes reacting on the thermionic emission. The control grid 41 or the screen grid 85 may be supported by the shield 33 or independently. The cathode comprises a thimble with emissive coating 31 and heater 27. The biassing potentials are such that each electrode 9 is positive to that secondary emitting electrode which is below it; it may have the same potential as that under the adjacent electrode 9.
