Abstract

483,575. Electron multipliers. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., and BANKS. G. B. Oct. 21, 1936. No. 28659. [Class 39 (i)] An electron multiplier has a source of electrons, a collecting electrode, and a plurality of grid-like or perforated secondary emissive electrodes interposed in succession in and extending across the space between the source and the collector and means for generating a magnetic field having lines of forces running in the direction of length between the source and the collector, the grids being parallel and canted so as to make angles other than right-angles with the lines of force, the arrangement being such that the secondary emissive electrodes are struck obliquely by electrons. In a modification, the grids 4 ... 9, Fig. 2, are nested cones, and the collector 3 is similarly conical. If the source is thermionic, instead of photo-electric, control and space charge grids may be associated with it. A potentiometer supplying the voltages for the secondary emissive electrodes may be housed in the envelope.
