Abstract

521,077. Electron multipliers. ELECTRICAL RESEARCH PRODUCTS, Inc. Nov. 18, 1938, Nos. 33529, 33530 and 33531. Convention dates Nov. 26, 1937, Nov. 26, 1937 and May 4, 1938. [Class 39 (i)] An electron multiplier comprises a number of secondary cathodes arranged to face each other in two staggered rows, each cathode being so formed, or having shield or baffle members attached to it so arranged, as to concentrate the electrons emitted from it on to the next cathode. In the form shown in Fig. 2 the primary cathode 25, which may be a photoelectric cathode, and each of the secondary cathodes 27<SP>1</SP>... 27<SP>10</SP> is formed with a flat portion forming the sensitive surface and two curved portions which concentrate the electrons as set forth. The cathodes are formed with flanges 32A, 32B, Fig. 3, which serve for attachment and also to screen one electrode from the next. Side flanges 33 prevent lateral dispersion of the electrons. Between the last secondary electrode and the anode 39 is a grid 45. Modifications are described in which (a) the sections of the secondary cathodes are continuous curves, (b) they are planes and the directing portions are also plane ; (c) the cathodes are formed as rectangular troughs, one side being formed as a grid through which pass the electrons from the preceding cathode. In any case the apparatus is symmetrical with respect to a plane parallel to the plane of the paper but not with respect to any plane perpendicular to the axis of the apparatus. In connection with some of the forms auxiliary cathodes for concentrating the electron stream are described. Dimensions are given in the different cases.
