Abstract

502,528. Electron multipliers. ELECTRICAL RESEARCH PRODUCTS, Inc. July 18, 1938, No. 21222. Convention date, Aug. 31, 1937. [Class 39 (i)] An electron discharge device has a primary cathode, a collector electrode and, between them, a plurality of successively arranged secondary-emitting electrodes, each provided with metallic plates adjacent its opposite sides and defining a channel along the electrode surfaces. In the form shown, the secondary electrodes are a plurality of helically arranged coatings 13 on a cylindrical outer wall 11, each facing a similar coating 16 on a central hollow member 10 which forms an accelerating electrode. Metallic plates 19, 21 complete the channel between the electrodes. The cathode (not shown) is a photo-electric coating similar to coatings 13 and the collector electrode is a plate 23. Leads are taken through the walls to each electrode, each accelerating electrode being maintained at the same potential as the succeeding secondary electrode, and the plates 19, 21 at an intermediate potential between their corresponding electrodes 13, 16. A cylindrical bar magnet inserted in the member 10 deflects the electrons between the secondary electrodes. The electrodes 16 are preferably secondary-electron-emissive and, if desired, the functions of electrodes 13, 16 may be interchanged.
