Abstract
516,621. Electron multipliers. BOSCH, F. J. G. VAN DEN. June 2, 1938, No. 16611. [Class 39 (i)] In an electron multiplier with a series of emission surfaces through which the electron stream passes these surfaces are formed by perforated plates the openings in which diminish in cross-section in the direction of the stream. The openings may be made by punching up the surface of the plate into a conical form, the cross section of the hole at exit being 3/5 that at entry. The wider ends may form 15 per cent. of the surface of the electrode. The arrangement shown comprises cathode 10 surrounded by an electrode 11, accelerating and control grids 12, 13 and a reflecting electrode 14 which diverts the stream through the multiplying electrodes 15-18. The holes in one of the electrodes 15-18 are preferably staggered with respect to those in the succeeding electrode. A collecting grid electrode 23 and final emission plate electrode 24 are provided. Each of the multiplying electrodes is surrounded by a flange 21 extending beyond the next electrode to focus the electrons on to the next electrode as described in Specification 516,664. These flanges may carry devices for heating the electrodes. The connections to the several electrodes are preferably spaced apart round the circumference. The openings, instead of being conical, may be in the form of long slits with turned-back edges.
