Abstract
500,447. Electron multipliers; magnets. ELECTRICAL RESEARCH PRODUCTS, Inc. Nov. 12, 1937, No. 31090. Convention date, Nov. 20, 1936. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XXXV] In an electron multiplier of the " hop-along " type the secondarily-emissive electrodes are of a U- or V-shaped cross-section and are arranged to form an open channel, i.e. no other part of the structure extends over the surface of the channel. The secondarily-emissive electrodes 122<1> ... 122<9> may also be formed with bulged or dished central portions 125 of substantially V-shaped outline convexly curved towards the cathode. The side arms of the channel &c. are bent back to form flanges 124 which grip insulating supports 116, formed with slots between the cathodes, and supported on cross pieces 115 carried by rods fixed ,to rings clamped to the tube stem. The anode 120 may be of similar channel form and provided with a mesh screen electrode 121, or these may be plane electrodes arranged perpendicularly to the axis of the tube. The leading-in conductors pass through a flange 112 on the tube stem, and the tube is adjustably held in clips between the arms of a permanent magnet, which is composed of a member of separate horse-shoe magnets 135 clamped together and provided with poles having chamfered edges or if a field which increases towards the anode is required the magnet poles 136 may be inclined to the tube axis. The secondary emitting substance is provided on the wall forming the bottom of the channel and this face may be parallel to or incline slightly to the tube axis. In the bulged form shown, the convex surface of the bulge is rendered secondary emitting. When the secondary cathodes are of V-shape, the inner surfaces are rendered secondary emitting and the anodes are formed of triangular shape and arranged at right-angles to the tube axis. The primary electrodes may be photoelectric or thermionic and provided with a control grid. Both surfaces of the electrodes may be secondary emitting and two anodes may be provided, one for each act of cathode surfaces. The anode and the adjacent electrodes are supplied direct from separate sources but a, potentiometer is used for the remaining cathodes. The cathodes may be of silver or copper, oxidized and caesiated. Specification 493,714 is referred to.
