Abstract

579,804. Electron discharge apparatus. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., and LUBSZYNSKI, H. G. Oct. 10, 1940, No. 15088. [Class 39 (i)] An electric circuit includes an electron discharge device having a cathode comprising a conducting base with an electron-emissive coating, the base having contiguous raised and unraised portions and the raised portion declining gradually in the neighbourhood of the junction between the two portions down to the unraised portion, the device being operated with such field intensity at the cathode that in the absence of such gradual decline excessive concentration of the field would occur at the junction and produce unwanted emission of electrons. As shown, a mica sheet 1 carries a conductive base 2 for a photo-cathode, which base may comprise a transparent layer of silver evaporated or otherwise coated on the mica. In order to attach a lead 3, the periphery 4 of the base is thickened, the edge of the thickened portion being formed as a bevel 7 extending down to the unraised portion 2, thereby avoiding sharp edges at the junction, which would result in concentration of the lines of force and unwanted electron emission, producing a bright ring on the fluorescent screen 6. The thickening of the edge 4 may be effected by masking the portion 2 and evaporating silver past the edge of the mask, and the bevelled edge 7 may be produced by spacing the mask from the base so that the evaporated silver creeps below the edge.
