Abstract
520,117. Electron multipliers. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Oct. 27, 1938, No. 31156. Convention date, Oct. 30, 1937. [Class 39 (i)] To prevent passage of ions in the anode to cathode direction in an electron multiplier the multiplying electrodes 2-10 are mounted on each side of and extending from the axis of the tube between the cathode 1 and the anode 11: the electrodes 2-10 are L-shaped, with the curved or re-entrant angular surface turned towards the axis and are spaced so that the distance d, Fig. 2, is less than the distance c: and so that the long legs of each L intersects the lines drawn between the short legs of the two previous L's, and may cross the central axis. The cathode and anode are shaped to correspond to the equipotential surfaces which' would exist if the series of electrodes were endless. The portion 1m of the cathode is foraminous, so as to pass the light from the source on to the photo-sensitive part. The electrodes are kept at successively higher potentials-which are exact multiples of each other-by means of a potentiometer. It is stated that the arrangements illustrated give a low dark current. The cathode may be thermionic and control electrodes may be provided;
