Abstract

462,035. Discharge apparatus. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., BRETT, G. F., and WRIGHT, G. M. Aug. 31, 1935, Nos. 24402/35 and 2355/36. [Class 39 (i)] An electron beam valve consists of an electron gun system, a main anode and an additional electrode disposed on the side of the anode remote from the gun, the main anode and additional electrode being so constructed and arranged that by varying the cross-sectional area of the beam at the anode by varying the potential on the gun anode, the ratio of the current passing to the main anode and additional electrode may be varied, with the result that the characteristic curve plotted between the gun anode potential and the main anode current has a downwardly - sloping portion. As shown, the main anode 5 is of U -section or in the form of a narrow plate, and the additional electrode consists of a plate. The gun system consists of a directly or indirectly heated cathode, a control electrode 2, an anode 3 and a suppressor electrode 4. The electrodes 2, 3, 4 are provided with slots parallel with the cathode, so that a ribbonshaped beam is projected towards the anode 5. The valve may be used for automatic volume control by connecting the gun anode 3 with the output circuit of a detector V2, the control electrode 2 being connected with the input circuit IC.
