Abstract
645,936. Valve amplifying circuits. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. Aug. 1, 1946, No. 22915. Convention date, Jan. 31, 1940. [Class 40 (v)] [Also in Group XL (a)] In a tuned high-frequency amplifier valve noise due to irregular emission from the cathode or from a secondaryemission electrode or in the distribution of electrons between two positive electrodes is decreased by appropriately phased feedback. In the arrangement of Fig. 1 a noise voltage is developed in the cathode lead by means of a coil 4 and is applied to the control grid via the inter-electrode capacity 5. This arrangement gives negative feed-back for the signal which damps the input circuit, and may be utilized to widen the pass-band without increasing the signal to noise ratio. In an amplifier comprising a secondary emission tube, Fig. 2, secondary emission noise is decreased by inductance 8 in the lead to the secondary emission electrode in conjunction with a condenser 9 over which feed-back is applied to the control grid. The output may be taken from the secondary emission electrode and the feedback from the anode, Fig. 3 (not shown); feedback may also be taken to an additional grid instead of the control grid. If the valve includes a screen grid, Fig. 4 (not shown), both secondary emission and distribution noise may be reduced by means of an inductance in the cathode lead, arranged so as to be traversed by the currents from the screen grid and secondary emission electrode. Gain control. Gain may be varied without affecting the feed-back by varying the bias on a suppressor grid or, in a valve employing secondary emission, by varying the potential of the secondary emission electrode. Specification 528,179, [Group XL], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also includes matter forming the subject-matter of Specifications 645,989 and 645,990 and in addition the following. At very high frequencies, transit-time noise may be reduced by means of an unshunted resistance in the cathode lead; noise may also be reduced by using a valve of suitable construction (see Group XL (a)). In an arrangement employing a velocity-modulation tube, noise is reduced by appropriate phasing of the input by damping or detuning the input circuit, in conjunction with electrode potentials giving an appropriate transit-time. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
