Abstract
609,845. Electron beam valves. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. March 15, 1946, No. 8121. Convention date; July 19, 1941. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XL (c)] In an amplifying circuit comprising a discharge tube having control and screen grids, deflecting plates and an anode, the signal voltage is applied to the control grid, and a second control by a lowfrequency or gain control voltage, is effected by utilizing both the control grid and deflecting plate characteristics. The Figure shows a discharge tube having a cathode 2, control grid 3, screen grid 4, anode 5 and deflection plates 6 and 7, the latter being connected to the screen grid 4. A plate 8, preferably connected to the anode, is provided to improve the electron distribution, and a low potential body 9 is provided to reduce secondary emission phenomina between the anode and positive deflection plate. The incoming signal and a slowly varying direct voltage, such as a gain control voltage, are applied to the control grid 3. The screen grid circuit includes a resistor 12 and a highfrequency byepass condenser 17, so that an amplified gain control voltage, but not signal voltage, is applied to deflector plate 7. Deflector plate 7 acts also as a collector electrode, so that the output from anode 5 is effectively controlled by the deflecting plate action in response to the low-frequency control voltage. The frequency of the signal input should be at least five times that of the low-frequency control voltage.
