Abstract
514,318. Wireless receiving apparatus. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. May 2, 1938, No. 13062. Convention date, April 30, 1937. [Class 40 (v)] A visual tuning indicator, of the type described in Specification 481,790, is arranged so that the control electrode can become negatively biassed relatively to the cathode, thereby increasing the area or angle of the shadow thrown by the control rod on the fluorescent screen. As shown in the Figure, the indicator tube 10 is coupled to a valve 18, the anode 21 of which is connected to the anode 13 of the indicator. This is connected, in turn, to the control rod 15 which shadows the fluorescent screen 14. The cathode 11 of the indicator is tapped to a potentiometer 16, 17 so that it is above earth potential. With no signal on the grid 20, the current through the resistance 22 drops the voltage of the anodes 21, 13, and therefore the voltage of the rod 15, below that of the fluorescent screen, so that the shadow thrown by the rod is a maximum. The circuit constants are so chosen that the voltage-drop across the tube 18 is less than that across the resistance 17, so that the rod 15 is negative with respect to the cathode 11. This increases the normal area of the shadow it casts. The indicator tube may contain only the elements 11, 15, 14, the necessary amplification being effected either by the valve 18, or by a separate combined amplifier and detector.
