Abstract

502,968. Discharge apparatus. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Sept. 27, 1937, No. 26121. Convention date, Sept. 26, 1936. [Class 39 (i)] An electron discharge device for giving visual indication of voltage, such as a tuning indicator for radio receivers, has a straight thermionic cathode 16, an anode 20 adjacent the cathode formed as or including a target 21 of thin metal sheet or foil adapted to become incandescent when bombarded by electrons from the cathode, and a control electrode 17 substantially parallel to the cathode and so arranged that when the anode is at a suitable potential the portion of the target reached by electrons and consequently the size of the incan descent regions produced on the target is an indication of the voltage applied to the control electrode. In the form shown, the cathode 16 is integral with the cathode 13 of an associated amplifying triode, the anode 15 of which is connected to the control electrode 17. The target 21 may be nickel À00005-À00025 in. in thickness formed by plating on a metal base, such as molybdenum, and stripping, or tantalum foil rolled to À00003- À00005 in. The electrode 17 may be a rod or a strip placed edgewise to the cathode, which may be coated with emissive material only on the part opposite the target. The usual circuit is connected to the rectifier load and is arranged so that at resonance the beams passing opposite sides of the control electrode overlap, giving a bright patch on a dull red background. British Specification 481,791 and U.S.A. Specification 2,051,188 are referred to:
