Abstract

403,973. Thermionic valves. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Marconi House, Strand, London, RUST, N. M., 109, London Road, Chelmsford, and BRETT, G. F., 23, Cross Flatts Avenue, Dewsbury Road, Leeds. July 4, 1932, No. 18890. [Class 39 (i).] An amplifier has an anode, a cathode, a control electrode placed close to the cathode, and a screen electrode placed close to the cathode and control electrode and arranged so as to allow only a narrow or small beam of electrons to pass to the anode. As shown, the cathode consists of a short filament F, the control electrode consists of a flattened cylinder G forming a Wehnelt electrode, and the screen electrode consists of a plate A with a slit A<1>. The anode P consists of a flattened cylinder closed at one end ; it is elongated to prevent the escape of secondary electrons or it may be closed by a grid. The screen A may be maintained at the potential of the anode. In a modification the anode is a plate, and a second screen, formed as a grid, is placed near the anode and connected with the cathode so as to prevent secondary emission ; or the second screen may be in the form of a plate with a slit and maintained at zero or a low potential. In another arrangement the cathode is of hairpin shape giving emission from a point, and the control electrode G, the slit A<1> and the anode are of circular shape. Dimensions and potentials are given.
