Abstract
252,079. Marconi's Wireless Telegraph Co., Ltd., and Gill, E. W. B. Feb. 18, 1925. Vacuum tubes. - A four-electrode valve, such that the sum of the currents which the outer grid and anode can pass, is always less than the maximum electronic emission, has its anode and inner grid maintained at positive potentials, while the outer grid is at a low positive or negative potential, the arrangement being such that increase in inner grid potential produces a decrease in inner grid current. Potential variations of high or low frequency may be applied to the outer grid 2. A resistance 5 of 20,000 ohms may be interposed between the inner grid 4 and a 40-volt battery 6, or one of 50,000 ohms for a 70-volt supply, giving potential magnifications of the values 16 and 40 respectively. A condenser and grid leak may be placed in the outer grid circuit. A condenser 8 transmits the magnified potential variations to the grid of a triode 10. The range over which the negative resistance effect occurs may be varied by altering the filament current. The diameter of the outer grid is not less than 2¢ times that of the inner grid, and not greater than five times the diameter of the inner grid or greater than its length. If the grids are flat, the distance between the grids must be greater than the distance from the filament to the inner grid and less than the length of this grid.
