Abstract

481,790. Discharge apparatus ; Wireless receiving - apparatus. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. June 16, 1936, No. 16780. Convention date, June 27, 1935. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] An electron discharge device for tuning or like voltage indication comprises an electron-emitting cathode surrounded by a bowl-shaped anode coated with fluorescent material, and one or more control electrodes between the anode and cathode adapted, in dependence on the potential applied thereto, to vary the area of the anode which is caused to glow by electrons from the cathode. The device may be combined in the same envelope with an amplifying stage, as in the form shown in Fig. 1, in which the cathode has two electron-emitting portions, the one 13 being surrounded by control grid 14 and anode 15 forming a triode, while the other 16 is surrounded by the bowl - shaped fluorescent anode 19. A rod-like control electrode 17 is connected directly to the triode anode 15. A cup-shaped shield 22 confines electrons to the slopiiig surface of anode 19 and is preferably connected to the anode by rods 23, Fig. 6. When used as a tuning indicator, the rectified carrier voltage developed across the diode load 30, Fig. 7, is applied through a resistancecapacity filter 33, 34 to the grid 14. A resistance 25 is connected between the anode and supply 26 ; as the grid 14 becomes negative the anode 15, and hence the control rod 17, becomes more positive and approaches the potential of anode 19 which is directly connected to supply 26. The shadow thrown by rod 17 thus becomes smaller and the edges thereof may be made to coincide or even to overlap, giving, when viewed from above, a sensitive indication of the potential of grid 14. Two diametrically opposite control rods may be used. In the form shown in Fig. 6, the control electrode 24 is a vane tapered so as to give uniform' control over the sloping surface of anode 19. A straight edge to the shadow is thus obtained, but other shapes of edge may be obtained by shaping the control electrode. The triode portion may be replaced by a multi-element tube. Specification 481,791 is reforred to.
