Abstract

889,832. Cathode-ray tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 1, 1958 [Oct. 4, 1957], No. 31350/58. Class 39(1) A luminous voltage indicator comprises an electron discharge tube comprising a cathode 2, Fig. 1, a planar reflector electrode 4 connected to the cathode a control grid 3 surrounding the cathode and an anode 5 arranged wholly at one side of the cathode 2 the anode 5 comprising a wire grid coated with a luminescent substance. It is suitable for use in transistorised computers and counters especially of binary type. A luminous indication is given in condition 1 and the indication is extinguished in condition 0. There is provided a control grid and an anode comprising a grid coated with luminescent material e.g. willemite. In one form Fig. 1, the grid serving as an anode is of elliptical form. In Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown) the anode is a curved or flat grid. The anode grid of Fig. 2 is formed by pressing a helix. The control grid 3 is of elliptical form and the voltage to be indicated is applied to this grid. A reflector 4 prevents electrons passing from the cathode away from the anode and the electrons from the other side of the cathode pass through the anode wires and are reflected by the space charge inside the anode to strike the reverse side of the luminescent coating. Luminescence occurs at an anode voltage of 25-50 volts e.g. in computers. The control grid 3 is connected to the collector of a transistor. The anode wires are of coarser pitch than those of the control grid. The luminescent coating is applied by spraying.
