Abstract

669,236. Electron beam apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. June 1, 1950 [June 4, 1949], No. 13727/50. Class 39 (i). An electric discharge tube in which a ribbon-like electron beam is adapted to occupy a plurality of fixed positions is characterized in that at least one collecting electrode of the beam is provided with one or more windows corresponding to the various positions of the beam, which windows become luminescent on being struck by the beam and are provided in a staggered manner in the direction of the greatest length of the cross-sectional area of the beam, the dimensions of the windows in this direction being less than the length of the beam and preferably between <SP>1</SP>/ 3 and <SP>2</SP>/ 3 of the length of the beam. In the Figure the anode D has ten windows E and is surrounded by a metallized mica plate, the metallization having corresponding windows recessed in it. The metallization may be so thin over the area of the windows as to be transparent and is covered with fluorescent material. Alternatively each window may be a gauze or grid covered with fluorescent material, or the edges of the apertures in the anode may be covered with fluorescent material and reflecting electrodes may be arranged in front of the anode. The windows may be formed in the shape of figures.
