Abstract

495,531. Cathode-ray tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Jan. 28, 1938, No. 2807. Convention date, March 31, 1937. [Class 39 (i)] In amplifiers, detectors, oscillators, or switching or like devices in which a beam of electrons is accelerated and variably directed towards a target having mutually insulated portions 16, 17, an electrode 18 located between and perpendicularly to the portions extends towards the cathode 12 and is biassed negatively relatively to the target to prevent secondary electrons emitted by each of the portions from reaching the other portion. The beam is focused by an anode 13 and a final anode 19 formed by a coating on the wall of the tube and is deflected by plates 14, 15 across an input resistance 26. The electrodes and the centres of the resistance 26 and of the output transformer 28 are connected to batteries 24, 25, 32 as shown. A grid 33 parallel to the plates 16, 17 is connected to the electrode 18 to screen the plates 16, 17 from the deflecting plates and to assist in suppressing the flow of secondary emission from one of the plates 16, 17 to the other. In modifications, the grid 33 is omitted, Fig. 1 (not shown), or a further grid is arranged on the cathode side of the grid 33, Fig. 3 (not shown). In the latter case, the electrode 18 and grid 33 may be connected to the cathode and the further grid to the point A. The aperture 23 in the anode 13 may be circular, square or rectangular. The electrode 18 with mica sheets at its sides may fill the gap between the plates 16, 17.
