Abstract

[Class 39 (i)] In electron beam deflection valves, the deflecting plates P1, P2 to which the alternating deflecting potentials are applied, are curved and have applied to them steady biassing potentials to cause the beam to follow the curved path between them. The plates act also to focus the beam, and in the arrangement shown the length of the plates is such as to focus the beam finely on the edge F1 of a target electrode T1 followed by a collector target T2. The target electrodes are preferably of U-shape to suppress secondary emission, and the sides of the target T1 are inclined away from the path of the beam. Axial adjustment of the focus of the beam is provided by an electrode S, whose primary purpose is to prevent secondary emission from the targets reaching the deflector plates. In an alternative arrangement, the output may be taken from plates, similarly shaped and disposed on each side of the beam, in conjunction with a pair of targets to supply another output circuit. The plates may be subdivided with additional focussing devices between the sections. The beam is preferably of ribbon form generated by a part cylindrical cathode C, shield G and slit anode A.
