Abstract

794,333. Velocity-modulated tubes. EITELMcCULLOUGH, Inc. Aug. 9, 1954 [Oct. 5, 1953], No. 23085/54. Class 39(1). The beam-forming structure comprises a concave cathode 2, a focussing electrode 8 adjacent the cathode, a first anode 7 having a bore of sufficient length to shield the cathode and focussing electrode completely from the remainder of the system and a second anode 11, both anodes being annular members capable of passing the beam without obstruction. By applying a high voltage V A to electrode 7 and a lower voltage V B to electrode 11 it is stated that an increased perveance is obtained. The bore in anode 7 is of length greater than its width but less than the distance from the cathode and has a widened portion adjacent the cathode. Ceramic cylinders 9, 12 sealed to the electrodes complete the envelope and the beam passes on to the high-frequency section 17. The anode 7 may be used for modulation of the beam. A further advantage of the arrangement is to reduce positive-ion bombardment of the cathode. Specification 794,334 is referred to.
