Abstract
1,069,672. Travelling wave tubes; klystrons. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Dec. 19, 1963 [Jan. 22, 1963], No. 50256/63. Heading H1D. An electron gun for a high-power discharge tube, e.g. a travelling-wave tube or a klystron, comprises a cathode emitter 22 for generating an electron beam to pass through an apertured anode structure 24, the area of the aperture being smaller than the area of the emissive surface 22, wherein the cathode emitter and the anode aperture are immersed in a converging magnetic field and a magnetic member 37 in the form of a hollow cylindrical member surrounds the cathode emitter and perturbs the magnetic field in the vicinity of the cathode emitter so as to increase the rate of convergence of the magnetic field and so as to cause the magnetic field lines substantially to follow the electric field lines between the cathode and anode. The anode structure comprises a modulating anode 20 having a longitudinally extending tube 29 and a main anode 25. A focusing electrode 34 following the contours of the concave emitter is located between the emitter and the magnetic member; coils 41 having a long heatconducting path spacing the focusing electrode from the shim. The electron beam is focused down the length of the discharge tube by a main magnetic field set up between two polepieces, one of which, 17, is spaced from and surrounds the shim.
