Abstract

679,258. Cathode-ray tubes. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. April 11, 1946 [April 12, 1945], No. 11225/46. Class 39 (i). A two-beam cathode-ray tube of the electrical storage type has a target electrode comprising a sheet of insulation 14 bearing a number of conducting strips 15 of relatively high secondary electron emissivity and shield grids 16, 17 at each end of the target having prongs 18, 19 extending between the strips. The sheet 14 may be of mica and the strips 15 may. be of silver photographically deposited; the signal plate 20 at the back of the sheet 14 is connected to an external indicating device such as the oscilloscope 201. In Fig. 1, the two electron guns are shielded electrostatically by a central shield plate 22 and are designed to scan along the lines L, L<SP>1</SP> in Fig. 2. The upper gun is used to scan at one frequency, e.g. 400 cycles per sec., and is modulated by a signal such as a radar signal; this discharges the strips 15, secondary emission being inhibited by the shield 16 which is at a negative potential. The lower gun scans at a lower frequency, e.g. 2 cycles per second, and re-charges the strips by secondary emission thus capacitatively impressing a signal on the plate 20. The scan of oscilloscope 20<SP>1</SP> may be synchronized to the scan of the lower gun. Specification 577,068 is referred to.
