Abstract

654,417. Cathode-ray tubes. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Feb. 25, 1948, No. 5670. Convention date, Sept. 5, 1946. [Class 39 (i)] A fine mesh screen, highly transparent to electrons, is mounted parallel and closelyadjacent to the target of a C.P.S. pick-up tube and is made positive so that electrons in the scanning beam are not substantially decelerated until they have passed the screen and photoelectrons liberated from the target do not return thereto. The grid repels ions produced by electronic collisions. The target assembly in the tube 1 comprises a thin transparent sheet 8, e.g. of mica, with a photo-sensitive mosaic 9 on the gun side and a thin transparent coating of metal 10 on the other side. Focusing and scanning deflection are by the electromagnetic coils 11, 12 but the deflection may be electrostatic. Electrons not landing on the target return to electrode 13 and signals may be taken from conductors attached either to electrode 13 or to the signal plate 10. The wall coating anode 6 extends from the first anode 2 to a point closely adjacent the target. The screen 17 mounted close to the target yields electric lines of force parallel to the axis of the tube. Its spacing from the target is about four tenths of an inch and its mesh 230 wires per inch with 46 per cent open area.
