Abstract

711,202. Television pick-up tubes. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Jan. 28, 1949 [Jan. 29, 1948; Jan. 29, 1948], Nos. 2411/49 and 2412/49. Class 39(1) An electron camera tube has a target comprising a supporting sheet of electrical insulating material which exhibits bombardment-induced conductivity. The material may be diamond, zinc sulphide, magnesium oxide, silicon carbide, or stibnite as described in Specifications 676,411 and 676,424. A transmitter tube 10 contains a double-sided target 11 comprising a thin layer .40 of cut diamond or of diamond dust or chips, a thin covering layer 41 of metal e.g. gold or platinum on one side and a thin photo-sensitive layer 42 of non-conducting material on the other side e.g. caesium oxide or caesium oxide-silver. Electron collecting mesh electrodes 14, 15 are situated on opposite sides of the target. An image of the object O to be transmitted is focused on to surface 42, liberating photoelectrons to mesh 15 and building up a charge image on the layer. The scanning-beam from gun 13 is of high velocity giving secondary emission equal to unity but causing conductivity at the impacted places in layer 40 and discharging the charge image on layer 42 to produce a video signal in the output circuit 33-38. In Fig. 5, the light image falls on a photo-cathode 65, the photoelectrons are accelerated on to a target 53 comprising material exhibiting electron bombardment induced conductivity coated with a thin layer 53 of gold or platinum which is at earth potential. A metallic barrier 54 surrounds the target and prevents photo-electrons passing to the scanned sides. The cathode 69 of the orthican scanning gun is at -300 volts and the conductivity induced by the photo-electrons results in the formation of a charge image at earth potential on the uncoated side of the layer 52. The scanning beam is reflected from those points at cathode potential and return to the electron multiplier 64 which yields an amplified video signal. The orthicon tube is provided with focusing, deflecting and alignment coils 66, 67. Specification 648,509 also is referred to.
