Abstract

879,569. Television pick-up tubes. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 27, 1958 [Feb. 7, 1957], No. 4225/57. Class 39(1). An electron discharge device comprises a target which includes a spongy layer of B.I.C. material, means for bombarding this layer with high velocity electrons whereby the layer acquires charges dependent on the intensity of the incident electrons, and means to project low velocity electrons on to the layer to neutralise these charges. In one embodiment a television pick-up tube has a target comprising a conducting grid 2 on which is disposed a continuous conducting sheet 3 which supports a spongy layer 4 of red antimony trisulphide 2-3Á thick. This layer may be formed by evaporation in a gaseous atmosphere at low pressure, for example in xenon at 0.3 mm. Hg. At one end of the envelope 1 is a photoelectric cathode 5 in contact with a transparent electrode 6. Photoelectrons are accelerated towards the target by electrode 7, focused by coil 8 and pass through grid 2 and sheet 3 on to layer 4 producing areas whose conductivity corresponding to the original optical image. Sheet 3 is maintained at a positive potential with respect to the cathode so that positive charges appear on the surface of layer 4 facing the electron gun 9, 10, 11. The beam from this gun is accelerated by anode 12, decelerated by electrode 13 and scans layer 4 by means of scanning coils 14. The scanning takes place in the presence of a longitudinal magnetic field from coil 15 so that the beam always impinges on the target at right angles. The low velocity scanning beam thus discharges layer 4 and produces picture signals across resistance 16. The target may include one or more layers of solid B.I.C. material about 0.1Á thick in addition to the spongy layer, and need not be of the same substance. Other suitable materials are arsenic trisulphide, silicon monoxide, silicon dioxide, magnesium fluoride, calcium fluoride and zinc sulphide. Specification 668,727 is referred to.
