Abstract

551,665. Cathode-ray tubes. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Aug. 25, 1941, No. 10847. Convention date, Aug. 23, 1940. [Class 39 (i)] In a cathode-ray tube of the type having a longitudinal magnetic focusing-field, the .effective diameter of the electron beam and the size of the resultant spot on the screen' is reduced by rejecting those electrons having a radial component of velocity exceeding 0.66 electron-volt. This is done by interposing two spaced apertured electrodes 24, 25 in the path of the beam and a formula is given relating the maximum radial velocity passed by the arrangement to the sum of the radii of the two apertures, their separation and potentials, and the length of a loop' performed by the electron in the magnetic field. The radii may be unequal, with the smaller nearer the electron gun. The apertures in electrodes 24, 25 may be of circular, rectangular or other shape. A television transmitter of the " orthicon " type is described in which electrons from a gun 3 pass through an accelerating anode 23, which may be omitted, to the two selecting apertured discs 24, 25, thence through slotted shield 10, deflecting plates 9, deflecting field 1'6 to mosaic screen 2. Owing to the immersion in the longitudinal magnetic field of coil 15, deflection occurs at right angles to the normal directions. The screen 2 is held at a potential near that of the cathode, so that the electrons approaching it with nearly zero velocity are selectively reflected in accordance with the potential distribution set up on the mosaic by the picture. The returning electrons follow the same path through field 16 through shield 11, diverge between plates 9 and, passing through slot 12 in shield 10; strike electrode 25. The magnetic field 16 may be replaced by deflecting plates, when the electrons do not return to plate 25. The screen 2 may also be fluorescent, photo-conductive or photo-voltaic. Numerical values of dimensions, spacing and potentials are given in examples. Specification 542,496 is referred to.
